More Notes: George and Lois Maisels
were enthusiastic collectors of porcelain, primarily of Herend. They
began collecting in Europe including the Herend factory in the
1970’s. Their collection spans tabletop pieces in numerous patterns,
vases and cachepots to lamps with hand painted matching lamp shades
and iconic fishnet porcelain animals. The collection is vast in
variety of patterns and the sheer number of articles, unmatched even
by commercial enterprises such as Neiman Marcus or Gump’s. For
instance, Rothschild Bird is a service for up to sixteen, numerous
piece place setting and has three different styles of cups and
saucers. The Fruits and Flowers is also a large service and has
numerous and discontinued serving pieces. The Maisels also
frequented the Thomas Goode & Co. Ltd. in London’s posh Mayfair
district. The story is that a sales person at Thomas Goode
approached the Maisels to buy back the heavy gold encrusted service
plates 10 years after they bought them. They kept the plates which
are offered in the sale.
There is a large collection of reel to reel tapes including albums
of Frank Sinatra, Jack Jones, Sammy Davis Jr., Edie Gorme, etc.
Although we have not played them, they look to be in pristine
condition.
The collection of paintings is largely by Richard E. Reynolds who
was commissioned by the Maisels to paint tromp l’oeil panels and
paintings, a large 12’ four panel garden setting screen with fantasy
figures and animals, a large wall size oil on canvas that features
exotic characters in a Kasbah, a fantasy set in formal 18th century
garden with fantastical animals dressed in period costumes.
